The ancient city of Pergamum (also written as Pergamon) dates back to the 12th century B.C. but saw its first notable era of prosperity under Lydian King Croesus in the 6th century B.C.

It was the main function was social and cultural as much as it was sacred. Also, it was one of the Seven Churches of Revelation. Asclepion, Galen born & Educated in Pergamon, was the authority of European medicine from the 2nd century until renaissance.

Pergamon’s acropolis and Asclepion are both listed among the top 100 historical sites on the Mediterranean. Most of the buildings and monuments in Pergamon date to the time of Eumenes II (197-159 BC), including the famed library, the terrace of the spectacularly sited hillside theater, the main palace, the Altar of Zeus, Temple of Athena.

The acropolis of Eumenes II remains a major attraction, and there are a host of other sights and a charming old quarter to entertain you. The foremost attraction is the Kizil Avlu or “Red Basilica,” a huge edifice on the river not far from the acropolis that was originally built as a temple to the Egyptian god Osiris, but later converted into a basilica by early Christians.
